THE NATURE ROUTE
"VALLE CAMONICA"

Valle Camonica is a
land with a rich environmental patrimony, so much so as to justify
within it the presence of two important
protected areas: the
National Park of thè Stelvio and
the Regional Park of the
Adamello.
Moreover, there are many Nature Reserves.
NATIONAL PARK OF THE
STELVIO
On its territory
there are as many as 2,300 typically alpine species of
flowers, birds
and mammals. Of particular interest there are deer, chamois,
wild goats and roe-bucks, but also weaseis, mink, foxes and squirrels.
Valle di Viso
It occupies the extreme
north-eastem pari of Valle
Camonica, borders on the
Valle di Peio
in the
province of Trento and is crossed by the
Narcanello stream. It is known
because of the village, at an altitude of 1,763 m, that
obtained its nome from “Case di Viso “, and is overtopped by the homonymous lake of unknown depth.
Valle delle Messi
It
borders to the east with Valle di Viso, wedged
between the Gavia
Pass and the Pietra Rossa Pass. The valley is
full
of flowers. Among the animals
populating the Valley,
the
weasel was elected as the symbol
ofthe inhabitants of Pezzo.
Val di Canè
It is wedged
between Val Grande and
Valle delle Messi. From a geological viewpoint, one
should note the presence of sugar-white marble
evident amia the dark
rocks: this is the “White
marble of Pezzo”, of the metamorphic rocks
certainly the most decorative.
Val Grande
This forms the
western border ofthe Park of the Stelvio and borders on the adjacent
Val di Canè. Ample pastures, bordered by rows of birches and
hazelnut-trees, frame the many meadows and farm chalets. In the spring
one can observe deer in the mixed groves of
larch and red fir. With a
bit of luck one might also see chamois deer,
now back on the mountain pastures.

SHELTERS AND B1VOUACS IN THE PARK OF THE STELVIO
REGIONAL PARK OF THE
ADAMELLO
Within the
Territorial Coordination Plan of the Park twelve Nature Reserves con be
distinguished (one integral, three oriented, eight partial), aimed at
safeguarding environmental and scenic features of major relevance and
therefore subject to specific directives.
The integral nature
reserve of “Val Rabbia and Val Gallinera” was instituted to protect
and safeguard, integrally and globalyl, nature and the environment in
its evolution without human influence. Here all activity is forbidden
except for scientific research and actuation of educational programmes
directiy carried out by the managing body or those it has authorized. In
Val Rabbia is located the
glacier
of
Bompià, defined a “black” glacier because it is covered in detritus
detached
from the walts due to deglaciation.
Val Gallinera is calied the
Valley
of giant trees because there are hundreds
of monumental conifers.
The
three oriented nature reserves were
instituted to safeguard, by
scientifically orienting the
evolution of the ecosystem, areas characterized by a rich flora or high
complexity of the structure of the vegetation, as well as a high
potentiality for fauna. In the oriented nature reserves scientific research, cultural
or educational exploitation and the practice of agricultural-forest-pastoral activities according to uses and customs, are allowed.
Val Gallinera-Aviolo.
In Val d’Aviolo there are three elements of botarnic
interest: the
peatland vegetation around the lake, the ground
consisting of
grassy mounds, typical of
a rigid climate with frequent
frosts and the presence of
the red pine cembro
as well as the
ground
pine.
Lago d’Arno.
This is the largest basin in the
Park ofthe Adamello. At the foot of
the Frisozzo mount, there is still a small glacier that, after the
disappearance of the
Vedretta di Saviore, inherited the title of most
southern glacier in Lombardy.
Alto Cadine-Val
Fredda. The
reserve begins upstream from the Meadow of Cadino
della Banca, and ends at the Vacca Pass. At mid-valley, the candid
marble rock of the Corna Bianca emerges, that constitutes one of the most
alluring and environmentally extraordinary places in the entire Park. Relevant elements relate to the
presence of sedimentary rocks and
magmatic intrusive
rocks.
The partial
reserves in the Park are the following:
-
partial morphoscenic and biologic nature
reserve of “Adamello “;
-
partial biologic nature
reserves of “Torbiere del Tonale” and “Torbiere di Val Braone”
-
partial
zoological-forest nature reserves of
“Boschi di Vezza and Vione”, “Piz d’Olda-Pian della
Regina”, “Frisozzo-Re di
Castello “;
-
partial morphoscenic and botanical
nature reserve of “Badile-Tredenus “;
-
partial
botanical nature reserve of “Marser-Bos
“.

SUPERMUNICIPAL
PARK OF BARBERINO (CIVIDATE CAMUNO)
The Park of
Barberino was instituted by the municipality of
Cividate Camuno. It is
located lo the east and south of the village of Cividate, between the
river Oglio and the stream of
Grigna. The attraclions offered by this
little jewel include the
panoramic view, the easy
walks on well-kept
tracks and the “nature itinerary”. The
Lakes of Esine are depressioni
in the ground of Carso origin that created proper lakes.
NATURE RESERVE
OF THE
GROVES OF GIOVETTO DI PALINE (BORNO)
The groves of
Giovetto di Paline were
declared by Regional Law n°
86 of 1983 a Regional Nature
Reserve and in 1985 were classified as
“partial biogenetic” and entrusted to the
management ofthe Regional Forest Organ. This reserve constitutes, in Europe, the first
example of a Reserve aimed at safeguarding the
natural
populations of red ants. In the
Reserve are the
Roccoli (platforms), today
used as ornithological
observatories.
NATURE RESERVE OF THE
VALLI DI SANT’ANTONIO
it
extends for 222 hectares on the orographic right of the river
Oglio,
including the municipality of
Corteno Golgi and the
Valleys
of Brandet and Campovecchio. The isolated position of these valleys
caused the primitive environmental features
to remain unchanged, and form a typical alpine landscape. The
village of Sant’Antonio,
at an altitude of 1124 m, deserves a visit, together with the boroughs
of Fucine and Les, because they represent typically characteristìc
structures and rural dwellings. Before the village there is a quaint
covered wooden bridge, unique in its style in Valle Camonica.
